Explaining Doodle Generations

What’s All This F1, F1b, F1bb Talk?

I get this question a lot, so I gave “Explaining Generations” it’s own page! I feel it is very important to understand this information. It will allow you to make a more educated decision about what you are looking for in a doodle!

GOLDENDOODLE

Purebred Golden Retriever + Purebread Poodle = F1 Goldendoodle (50% Golden Retriever/50% Poodle)

F1 Goldendoodle + Poodle = F1b (25% Golden Retriever/75% Poodle)

F1b Goldendoodle + Poodle = F1bb (12.5% Golden Retriever/87.5% Poodle)

F1 Goldendoodle + F1 Goldendoodle = F2 (50% Golden Retriever/50% Poodle) *may not get furnishings (teddy bear look)

F1 Goldendoodle + F1b Goldendoodle = F2b (37.5% Golden Retriever/62.5% Poodle)

F1b Goldendoodle + F1b Goldendoodle = Multigenerational (approx 25% Golden Retriever75% Poodle)

Any F1b generation goldendoodle bred to another is considered a multigenerational Goldendoodle, just make sure you know whether or not the parents are “furnished”

Understanding Furnishings

***The important thing to know about any of these generations is that some goldendoodles (and doodles in general) won’t get the teddy bear look if parents don’t carry the Furnishing gene. The furnishing gene is what gives doodles their fluff (the teddy bear look). The furnishings is the hair around their eyes, muzzle, and body. Some doodles can have what is called a flat coat. This is one of the reasons genetic testing is very important. If 2 doodles are bred and each of them only carry one of the furnushing genes then 50% of the litter will be unfurnished and look like a golden retreiver, they will also shed like a golden retriever. We call this an improper coat. Most people desire the goldendoodles breed for the non-shedding factor in their coat AND the amazing characteristics and temperaments of both the poodle and golden retriever. Understanding this concept will better prepare you when it comes to choosing your dog!

CAVAPOOS

Purebred King Charles Cavalier + Purebread Poodle = F1 Cavapoo (50% Cavalier/50% Poodle)

F1 Cavapoo + Poodle = F1b (25% Cavalier/75% Poodle)

F1b Cavapoo + Poodle = F1bb (12.5% Cavalier/87.5% Poodle)

F1 Cavapoo + F1 Cavapoo = F2 (50% Cavalier/50% Poodle) *may not get furnishings (teddy bear look)

F1 Cavapoo + F1b Cavapoo = F2b (37.5% Cavalier/62.5% Poodle)

F1b Cavapoo + F1b Cavapoo = Multigenerational (25% Goldendoodle/75% Poodle)

Any Cavapoo F1b bred to another F1b is considered a multigenerational Cavapoo.

Weights/Sizes

Knowing the weights and sizes a puppy will be as an adult is a little bit of a guessing game! We CANNOT guarantee the exact weight your puppy will be in adulthood. We are able to make a pretty educated guess though. The puppy’s weight ia dependent on the size of the Dam and Sire. They are usually a range of weights between the two. For example a Sire who weighs 10lbs and a Dam who weighs 25lbs will have puppies who weigh an average of 17.5lbs pounds… so you could have a litter that has 5 puppies and have the following adult weighs: 10, 13, 15, 19, and 25. That is why there is such a gap in guessing what puppies will weigh as adults. We track the puppy’s weights weekly to give us a better estimate of what we expect their adult weight to be. We usually have a pretty good idea when they are about 8 weeks.

Below is a chart that explains the estimated sizing or goldendoodles. Every breed varies and differs on what is considered toy/mini/medium/standard. Do your research so that you have a better idea of what you are looking for.
